Is it common among our membership to pay more for health insurance at age 65 with Medicare and supplementary insurance than it was for coverage before age 65?

I am retired and will turn 65 in February. I received a letter from the Illinois Dept. of Central Management Services stating that, if I am Medicare-eligible, I must enroll in Medicare or my health insurance benefits from the State would be reduced. The State insurance would subtract any benefits that Medicare would pay before making its benefit payment.

I will be paying about $96 per month for Medicare Part B coverage. Since I do not pay any premium for my State insurance, I will indeed be paying more for my health insurance at age 65, $96 more per month to be exact.

In addition, I do not qualify for Social Security retirement so I won't be able to pay the Medicare premium out of that benefit.

When my wife turns 65 next year, she also will have to pay the Medicare Part B premium. She too won't qualify for Social Security benefits. However, her spousal State health insurance premium will decrease by about $5/month (big deal!).
